Mata-publiknusantara.com, Jakarta – A shocking escalation in the Middle East conflict has claimed the lives of three Indonesian soldiers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The soldiers, deployed as part of the UN’s peacekeeping mission to monitor hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, were killed in an Israeli military strike that directly targeted UN positions. The attack has sparked outrage across the international community, raising urgent questions about Israel’s conduct and the safety of peacekeepers operating under the UN flag.

According to UNIFIL reports, the attack occurred near the Blue Line, the UN designated border area between Israel and Lebanon. Israeli forces launched artillery and air strikes in response to Hezbollah rocket fire, but one of the strikes hit a UNIFIL compound where Indonesian peacekeepers were stationed. Despite clear markings of the UN flag and the neutral status of the mission, the compound was struck, leaving three Indonesian soldiers dead and several others injured.

The United Nations has condemned the attack, calling it a violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions, which require all parties to protect peacekeepers and civilians. Indonesia’s government has demanded accountability, while global leaders have expressed alarm at the targeting of forces whose sole mandate is to maintain peace and stability.

*Wilson Lalengke’s Strong Condemnation*

Wilson Lalengke, Chairman of the Indonesian Citizen Journalists Association (Persatuan Pewarta Warga Indonesia – PPWI) and an international human rights defender, issued a powerful statement in response to the tragedy. He condemned the brutality of Israeli soldiers who deliberately targeted peacekeepers under the UN flag.

“This is an act of barbarity. Israeli forces have committed a grave violation by attacking UN peacekeepers who are clearly marked and whose mission is to bring peace to all parties. Killing Indonesian soldiers serving under the UN flag is not only a crime against Indonesia but a crime against humanity. The international community must act decisively to stop Israeli military brutality,” Lalengke declared, Wednesday (31-03-2026).

He emphasized that UN peacekeepers are neutral actors, tasked with protecting civilians and preventing escalation. “Targeting them is an assault on the very idea of peacekeeping. It undermines the credibility of the UN and threatens the safety of all peace envoys worldwide,” he added.

*Call for International Action*

Lalengke urged the international community to take immediate steps to hold Israel accountable. He called on the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency session and demand an independent investigation into the attack. “The world cannot remain silent. If Israel is allowed to continue targeting peacekeepers with impunity, then no UN mission anywhere will be safe. This is a direct challenge to international law and the authority of the United Nations,” he said.

At the same time, Lalengke stressed that Hezbollah and other armed groups must also be pressured to cease attacks that provoke Israeli retaliation. “We must be consistent. Hezbollah must stop launching rockets into Israel and refrain from actions that endanger civilians and peacekeepers. Violence from either side only prolongs the suffering of innocent people, including UN peace envoys who risk their lives for peace,” he stated.

The deaths of the Indonesian soldiers highlight the precarious position of UN peacekeepers in volatile regions. UNIFIL, established in 1978, has long operated in southern Lebanon to monitor ceasefires and prevent escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. Peacekeepers from dozens of countries serve under the UN flag, often in dangerous conditions. The targeting of UN positions undermines the mission’s credibility and threatens to destabilize the fragile balance along the border.

Indonesia, one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions, has lost soldiers in previous deployments, but the deliberate targeting of its troops by Israeli forces marks a new and alarming development. The incident risks straining diplomatic relations and could prompt calls for stronger international oversight of Israel’s military actions.

*Upholding Humanitarian Principles*

The attack underscores the urgent need to reaffirm humanitarian principles. Peacekeepers are protected under international law, and their safety is paramount to maintaining global stability. Lalengke emphasized that the right to life, respect for human dignity, and adherence to international conventions must guide all military actions. “Israel must respect the Geneva Conventions, the UN Charter, and the principles of human rights. No state has the right to disregard these obligations,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of judicial accountability. “The International Criminal Court should investigate this incident. Those responsible must be prosecuted. Justice must be served for the families of the Indonesian soldiers and for the integrity of the UN peacekeeping mission,” Lalengke urged.

The killing of three Indonesian UN peacekeepers by Israeli military strikes represents a grave violation of international law and a dangerous escalation in the Middle East conflict. Wilson Lalengke’s condemnation reflects the outrage felt by many across the globe. His call for decisive international action — both to stop Israeli military brutality and to pressure Hezbollah to halt attacks — underscores the urgent need for accountability and restraint on all sides.

As the world mourns the loss of Indonesian soldiers who gave their lives in the service of peace, the question remains: will the international community rise to defend the principles of human rights and the sanctity of UN peacekeeping missions, or will silence allow further brutality to unfold?
